Podcasting

Getting ready the start podcating lecture What is Podcasting?

  • It’s like blogging… but with audio or video

What’s needed? Link to a page showing his setup.

  • A Microphone – He uses a $100 microphone with a pop screen. (AKG Preception 100) and MAudio MobilePre for sound capture hardware.
  • Recording Software – he uses Audacity
  • A website to host – He uses WordPress and his plugin Podcast to to actually
  • Something to say or play.

He likes it because its so personal, you inject yourself into it. He started with podcast alley. He mentioned how he first worked on injecting podcast into the itunes library… learned a lot.

He went to WordPress and used that because it had features he missed in other podcasting options. He loved the rich capabilities. He had figured it all out, but “how about everyone else?”

Podpress!

  • A plugin designed for WordPress
  • Handles all complexities of extending RSS2 for the enclosure tags and itunes tags
  • Makes adding a podcast very easy.

Looking at Sample podcast WordPress site. http://www.mightyseek.com/podcast_setup

Adding a podcast to a post

  • You can point to a number of different media files. It’ll auto detect.
  • You can give it a description
  • It’ll detect different things about the file, and fill in tags
  • It add in the media player for the file.
  • It can play the player inline, in a pop up, and many other ways.

He goes over the feed, and how his plugin sets it up, so itunes likes it. He then goes to settings, showing how it looks published, and shows how it can be edited in real time.

He talks about how complexities of the feed, and what did it really do, and he worked to make it understandable and clear. WordPress doesn’t really give a lot of control over tracking subscription numbers and downloads. He then showed the download stats.(I just got told not to belive the stats though, it’s “bogus”)

Once the podcast is all set up… he’s also setting up with different podcasting networks to allow you to see the files you have there, and work with them.

He plans to use the new tagging ability to enrich podcasting when the new version of WordPress come out.

Then moved to questions and answers.

Question 1 was from Douglas Bell of Preview Cast. Feedburner A: YES feedburner is broken with podcasts.

Question 2 – So doing a podcast without doing a podcast. Why? Your posting media files… but using podcast is very easy and allows you to actually podcast to itunes and others.

Switching from one platform to another. Podcast has an interesting import capability… that hasn’t been touched, and doesn’t work. He’s failed there… talks… but…

Adding a upgrade system for plugins. Matt says he’ll be adding it with WordPress 2.3. Hopefully similar to Firefox.

Question is the e a way to view a video from within a feed? The feed does have an enclosure tag. There isn’t a lot of feed readers that have the ability… He doesn’t know when it’ll support it. (Google Reader shows it)
